Illuminated Manuscripts and Leaves from John Windle Antiquarian Bookseller

Death of the Virgin from Bruges manuscript (left), and the lovely Bathsheba.

Death of the Virgin from Bruges manuscript (left), and the lovely Bathsheba.

Item 23 consists of two illuminated manuscript initials, the letters "P" and "B." These were taken from a larger French work from 1500-1520, perhaps from Tours. The work has been attributed to an artist identified as "Master of Morgan 85" from a Book of Hours in the Morgan Library. The "B" is a miniature with a drawing of David and Goliath within the letter, while the "P" contains an image of the nativity. $25,000.

As is now clear, text descriptions can hardly do justice to works that are notable for their illustrations rather than words. If you are interested in illuminated manuscripts or pages therefrom, both of great antiquity and a few of more recent vintage, you need to see this catalogue and CD.
