The Doctrine of Caiaphas by Rev. David Murdoch D.D.

I have not lost hope, my days are over in the place I am now in; but that does not settle the point of justice for which I shall contend. I seek no more; I shall be satisfied with no less. I did not commence this controversy, and am, therefore, so far, not responsible for the consequences. My fault now is, that I “will not go out of the way.” It is actually considered a crime in me because I “will not leave Elmira;” because I will not take good advice, and “retire quietly.” On these matters, to my own Master I stand or fall, and as, of consequence, I expect to hear my adversary calling out, “Art thou he that troubleth Israel? I answer, “I have not troubled Israel, but thou and thine adherents have continued to do so these nine and a half years past; and, if I should continue as long to stand up against your oppression, please to remember that you have given me the example, and it will go hard if I do not better by the institution. What you draw to your bosom, calling it good, cannot be named bad in the same breath. Thus together shall David Murdoch and Tracy Beadle go down in the history of Elmira Presbyterian Church.
