Auctions in March

For the month of March 89 auctions in the books, manuscripts, maps and ephemera category are scheduled.  The pace of sales is brisk, the year over year comparison suggests we’ll see 95+ events on the calendar in a few weeks.

As has now been reported elsewhere in AE Monthly by Mike Stillman, the median lot realization at auction rebounded in 2013 for the first time in 5 years, up some 7%.

The auctions in March so far suggest the trend toward a more eclectic mix of printed items continues to intensify.  Comics and movie posters, autographs, and prints are now every day offerings sitting side by side with the books, manuscripts, maps and ephemera that have over the past ten years dominated the category.

To some extent the early indicators of what will soon become mainstream are the intense and fresh offerings at the independent fairs where, if you have a heartbeat and the price of a table you can present your best thinking and your ideas on where collecting in the category is going.  From there to the mainstream, to price guides, into dealer and auction catalogues is then only a short journey if seasoned professionals in the field endorse the direction.

The auctions represent the day-to-day reality and the unscripted shows a window on tomorrow.  Based on the auction mix we are now knee-deep in transition from ‘what we know’ to what the field is becoming.  So it’s interesting and complex.
