New Acquisitions in Americana from the William Reese Company

The "Beaver" map of North America.

The "Beaver" map of North America.

Item 2 is another set of books, History of Woman Suffrage, edited by Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Matilda Joslyn Gage, and Ida Husted Harper. The first four volumes were published between 1881-1902, and contain numerous documents concerning the suffrage movement, as well as some pertaining to abolition and temperance. Volume 2 is inscribed by Anthony to Maria Porter, whose home served as a regular stop on the Underground Railroad. Ms. Anthony died a few years after the publication of the fourth volume. The fifth and sixth weren't published until 1922, and cover the years 1900-1920. The title pages of the last two volumes are able to proclaim, "After seventy years came the victory." $15,000.

Item 108 is one of the most important maps relating to the English-French dispute over lands in North America during the pre-French and Indian War colonial period. It is A New and Exact Map of the Dominions of the King of Great Britain on Ye Continent of North America... by Herman Moll, published in 1731. The boundaries are quite favorable to the British, using the St. Lawrence as the line between English America and French Canada. The map includes four inserts, three from the southern states and a fourth that has led to this being known as the "Beaver Map." This insert shows Niagara Falls with a slew of beavers in the foreground, the perspective of which makes it appear that the Falls are overrun with giant beavers. $35,000.
