Description | Seventy lots of some of the most important Americana in existence. The collection was sold anonymously although the book trade certainly would have known. The sale consisted of only 70 lots. Among them is a Columbus Letter, Vespucius' 1504 Mundus Novus letter,the 1516 (Peter) Martyr,the 1524 Cortes Letter with the map of course, John Brereton's A Briefe and trus Relation of the Discoverie of the North Part of Virginia...printed in 1602 and many other exception pieces. |
Scope of Text | The collector, Mr. White, does not have an entry in Dickinson's Dictionary of American Book Collectors but nevertheless receives an entire page in Scribner's Dictionary of American Bibliography. Mr. Treadway was a builder and is credited with developing low cost housing in Brooklyn. In 1879 he published his first book "Improved Dwellings for the Laboring Classes" and subsequently published two other titles. Later in life he served in several political positions. |
