Poetry and Literature from Alexander Rare Books
Here is an item older than most in this catalogue: A Summer Story, Sheridan's Ride And Other Poems, by Thomas Buchanan Read. This collection was published in 1865, and includes Read's most famous poem recounting the ride of Union General Philip Sheridan to rally his troops during the Civil War. This copy contains an inscription from Read. Item 287. $400.
Kenneth Hopkins is not a particularly well remembered writer or poet, though he published many works from the 1930s to the 1960s and was friendly with the poetical Powys brothers. Item 169 is one of his earliest works, Six Sonnets, published from his native Bournemouth, England, in March 1938. It is likely one of his first works. Hopkins was said to peddle his poetry "door-to-door," a method of selling poetry not much in use these days. In later years, Hopkins taught in America, at the University of Texas and Southern Illinois University. Item 169. $125.
Item 72 is one of 75 signed copies of Let ‘Em Roll Kafka by Pete Brown, published in 1969. The poet Brown is best known for his writing collaborations with the '60s rock group Cream. He was lyricist and co-writer with Jack Bruce for the songs "White Room" and "I Feel Free," and with Bruce and Eric Clapton for "Sunshine of Your Love." $75.
