Knuf Rare Books Offers Varied Works

Item 38 is an incunable, from no later than 1491: Floretus. It is a Christian poem that was often used to instruct children. It would be reprinted many times, but this is the first edition. The book has been attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux, who lived in the 11th and 12th centuries, but this claim is disputed. This edition was published by Heinrich Quentell and contains the “accipius” woodcut he first used in 1490. It displays an instructor, an open book in his hand, a dove on his shoulder, while two children, books in their hands, listen intently. $15,600.
