Maps, Views and Globes from Martayan Lan

Item 18 focuses in on a portion of the area covered by De L'Isle, Carte des Lacs Du Canada, the “lacs” being the Great Lakes. The work of Bellin and Charlevoix “significantly updated De L'Isle's maps.” They had all five lakes in their basic positions, and Erie, Ontario, and Michigan look generally as expected, but Huron and Superior still needed quite a bit of work. This was 1744, so understanding of the region was still limited. The map includes the location of French missions, trading forts, and Indian villages, with Fort Ponchartrain at the site of today's Detroit. A couple of imaginary islands appear within Lake Superior, apparently confusion resulting from multiple names being given to Isle Royale. $4,500.

Item 22 is an untitled lithograph, circa 1906, of the El Tovar Hotel at Grand Canyon, the canyon appearing to the side of the hotel. The hotel was opened in 1905, part of the Harvey house chain that followed the railways to scenic locations in the West. A railway spur had been built to the canyon so people could take in the wonders during the pre-automobile age, but visitors needed a place to stay. This elegant hotel would have appealed to the well-heeled. The El Tovar remains open for business to this day. $5,500.
