Item 55 is an iconic anti-fascist poster from the Spanish Civil War. It pictures a dead child, a numbered identification tag tied to her body. In the background is a sky scene filled with bombers flying overhead. It proclaims – Madrid. The “Military” Practice of the Rebels. What Europe Tolerates or Protects. What Your Children Can Expect. Despite help for the republican cause by volunteers from around the world, Franco's fascists, with Nazi help, prevailed. It was something of a test run for the fascists for World War II. This poster was created in 1937. $600.

There are many things needed to win a war – well-trained soldiers, the best armaments, skilled leaders. However, one essential item is often overlooked – condoms. These two World War II posters by Arthur Szyk reminded soldiers of this essential need. One shows characters of Mussolini, Tojo, and Hitler, each showing the effects of a sexually transmitted disease, with the heading, “Fool the Axis - Use Prophylaxis.” The other is headed V.D. Tojo says, “American soldier could catch it with ease.” Hitler responds, “But – Prophylaxis prevents disease.” The posters were published by John Wyeth & Brother, Inc., the drug and condom manufacturer. War profiteering? Evidently, at least some soldiers had a bit of free time, even during the middle of a war. Items 65 and 66. Priced at $3,200 each.
