Aleph-Bet Offers More Children's Books
This is a more serious example of literature for children, from 1853: Pictures and Stories from Uncle Tom's Cabin. This is an abridged version of Harriet Beecher Stowe's classic anti-slavery polemic. The preface states, “This little work is designed to adapt Mrs. Stowe's touching narrative to the understanding of the youngest readers and to foster in their hearts a generous sympathy for the wronged Negro race of America.” Item 551. $1,650.
Item 233 is a game, one not designed to teach a generous sympathy for others: The New and Fashionable Game of the Jew. Created in London in 1807, the center of the board game depicts a stereotypical Jew, holding a bag of money and some loose coins. The object of the game is to save yourself from having to deposit your money with the Jew. $5,500.
