Literature and More from B&B Rare Books
Item 29 is a first edition of the masterpiece of Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Cien Anos de Soledad (One Hundred Years of Solitude). It was published in 1967, three years ahead of the first American edition. It tells of several generations of a family, over the course of a century. This copy is inscribed, in Spanish, affectionately to Sylvia Ripstein, sister of a Mexican film director who adapted another of Marquez's books. $11,000.
Item 12 comes from a man who wrote some of the most important books the world has ever known, though few think of him as a writer. Albert Einstein is known for being a scientist, a physicist whose theories explained many of the mysteries of nature, though few of us have the capacity to understand them. The book is Einstein: His Life and Times. It was published in 1947. This copy is inscribed by Einstein to a Mrs. Lazarus, with the comment “(without responsibility for the content).” Philipp Frank, the author, was responsible for the content, though one can assume Einstein was satisfied with that content since he was signing copies. $7,500.
