Hindman Auctions of Chicago has two auctions soon coming into the rooms: 165 lots from The Dorros Family Collection on the 9th, and 411 more of Fine Books & Manuscripts, Including Americana on the 10th. Temptation awaits!
Book collections often reflect their collector’s spirit and The Dorros Family Collection on the 9th, is an exceptional mélange of words, maps and plates through which you can feel the collector’s energy. Here is the introduction to their catalogue.
The Dorros Family Collection has been the passion of Dr. Gerald Dorros, a pioneering internationally renowned interventional cardiologist, who has also been a rodeo Cutting Horse World Champion. Dr. Dorros was among the first doctors to perform a coronary angioplasty, and subsequently taught interventional cardiology, expanding the field to include peripheral vascular interventions while operating across the globe. And, while he never had rode a horse until he was 60 years of age, he diligently trained and learned how, and in 2021 won the yearlong worldwide competition for the National Cutting Horse Association’s (NCHA) Senior World Tour’s $25,000 Novice Non-Pro Class.
We mention this to suggest he takes his passions seriously. Book collecting has also been a keen focus.
The Dorros Family Collection reflects Dr. Dorros’ diverse interests, with strengths in the history of the American West, travel and exploration, ornithology, medicine, music and literature.

As well, the Fine Books & Manuscripts sale on the 10th reflects diverse subjects and interests. The first 40 lots relate to fencing. After these old, and rare volumes, there is a significant run of books by and relating to Richard Francis Burton, the British explorer and writer, lots 41 to 86.
Beyond these two subjects there is a wide range of broader subjects, everything from Americana to Travel & Exploration, that will provide something for those on the hunt.
As well, there is a collection of Charles Dickens’ material that was acquired more than 30 years ago by a new collector and now, in the fullness of advanced age, he has become hopeful to do well by doing good. He and I have spoken many times about it and he ultimately decided to have Hindman auctions handle the disposition of his collection. His lots start at 201 and run to 235. He loved the material and his greatest hope that others will feel the same way. To make that possible he’s agreed to offer the material at very low start bids.
